Alcaraz–Sinner: when the return average hides the matchup
A tournament can say dominant. One opponent can ask a completely different question.

An opponent mix can disguise a difficult head-to-head matchup.
There is a useful historical warning in Sinner’s 2025 Rome campaign. ATP’s analysis put his tournament return-games-won rate at 39.3%. In the final against Alcaraz, he failed to break in ten return games. Both statements describe the same tournament. ATP Tour, 25 May 2025
What to watch
The lesson for the next preview is to ask which opponents produced the average. A return number combines the incoming serve, the return itself and everything that follows. Changing the surface or the server can change the question. Start with the first and second serve separately. Then watch what the return achieves: immediate attack, a neutral exchange or a defensive first ball. Winning a point after a long rally does not tell you that the return itself did the damage.

There is a trade-off in position. Taking the ball earlier can claim time but leave less reaction room. Standing deeper can buy that room while changing the server’s available angles. Judge the outcome of the pattern, rather than treating either position as inherently correct.
What would change the read?
Our pre-match test is specific: can the returner repeatedly stop the server controlling the next ball? The first few examples are clues to revisit as the match develops, not enough evidence to declare a new performance level.
