Mahomes–Allen: what the release-time number leaves out
A quick average can coexist with disrupted plays. Read the denominator before judging the protection.

Time to throw sounds like a simple measure of how long a quarterback has. In the NFL/AWS glossary, it measures snap-to-release time on pass attempts and excludes sacks. That exclusion matters when the question is whether an offence can handle pressure. NFL/AWS glossary, page 17
What to watch
Consider an illustrative offence that throws quickly on twenty attempts but takes five sacks. The release-time average describes the throws. It does not make the five disrupted plays disappear. Add those missing outcomes before calling the passing plan comfortable. For a Chiefs–Bills preview, ask how Mahomes or Allen is expected to buy the next decision. Does the first route provide an immediate answer? Does extra protection remove an option downfield? If the quarterback escapes, is a receiver creating a new passing lane or is the play becoming a scramble?

Read quick releases alongside plays that ended another way.
Those are different solutions with different costs. A fast check-down can keep a drive alive, but its value also depends on the distance needed. A longer developing play can be deliberate, rather than evidence that the quarterback failed to read the defence.
