McDavid: the point total needs a second column
Before a production streak becomes a prediction, separate the situations that created it. The same total can tell different stories.
Start with the situation.
Five-on-five and power-play hockey are different game states. A scorer’s headline total combines opportunities that do not necessarily arrive in the same way next time. For a McDavid preview, our first question would be where the recent production came from. Was it built through sustained even-strength possession, a run of power-play chances, or a mixture? The total alone cannot answer that.
Follow the route to the chance.
An entry with control, a recovered loose puck and a quick chance off a turnover place different demands on an opponent. Watch the sequence before the final pass. Does the defence have time to set, or is it still turning toward its own goal? We would build a watchlist around the repeatable action: gaining the zone, retaining the puck under pressure and finding the next option. This is a scouting framework, not a measured claim about current form.
What would change the read?
If the headline surge depends on opportunities the next matchup may not reproduce, lower the weight you place on that surge. If the same routes keep producing dangerous situations across different opponents and game states, investigate that pattern more closely. A highlight is the beginning of that investigation, not its conclusion.
