A total can hide the moment that changed the match. That matters when you use it to predict the next one.
Separate the game at major changes.

What to watch
Before carrying a strong xG total into an Arsenal or City prediction, divide the previous match at its important changes: the opening goal, a dismissal, a substitution that changed the shape. Then ask which part resembles the next opponent and likely game state. Consider a purely illustrative case: most of a team’s chances arrive while it is chasing a lead against ten players. Those chances happened. But treating that period as its normal attacking level would quietly assume the same conditions will return.

Compare relevant situations and the same xG provider.
Pair the timeline with shot locations and separate penalties from open-play chances. Look for a repeatable route into useful shooting positions. Keep the provider consistent when comparing matches.
What would change the read?
The strongest takeaway is a specific one: this team repeatedly created a particular kind of chance under relevant conditions. That is a testable pre-match argument. A large total on its own leaves too much of the story out.
